This is is an overview of my portfolio of work during the last five years. As indicated, some pieces are available for purchase.
In much of my narrative work, I start with an idea such as a funny experience that I can push open, a moment in time that is frozen and familiar, or something that makes me laugh and enjoy the experience of putting it on canvas. As with all artwork, it is open for interpretation and the viewer brings his or her own experiences and sense of humor to the piece.
For me, the interpretive work is my most highly stylized work. I start with a concept and push it, as is seen with my new series "Coral". I find that as an artist I like to go back and forth between styles as this allows me thinking time. There is almost a therapeutic process in creating images such as the coral and I find this work more challenging in many ways as it requires more patience. I find that I often work tightly then loosely in order to gain access to the middle, that space where my hand is not too detailed but not so loose that I don't have any control. This space is where I like to be for my own expression.
Still lifes are actually interpretive as well...again I like to find an item such as the urns and push as far as I can at that moment. In this particular series there are probably 45 to 50 pieces, several of which are represented in this site. I will often step away from them for a year or two and then return to the image with new information and a new view. I often discover, however, that the subject is complete as is probably the case with the urns... we'll see!

I have studied and interpreted the nudes for over 28 years, and every couple of years I will hit a magic period. This has happened to me several times and it is always such a thrill. In many ways, the model is as responsible as the artist for this. It is his or her comfort, aura and presence that help this journey. Again, I have always worked in series with particular models and it takes a certain mental and visual stimulation of the artist towards that model to make you want to make hundreds of sketches and paintings. I guess in many ways it's like a muse. I'm looking for a new one? Watch out when I find one - the work is always so exciting.

The small works are an experience in studies. As most of my work is large in size, working small helps me to work through problems and keep my painting hand in control. I experiment in this area and will often stumble onto something that is quite rewarding and fun as in the "Bathers" series.

I have always been interested in the figure as a vehicle of expression. I have experimented with many forms of stylization, proportion, balance and narrative using the figure. For me, the figure is the vehicle that's help me to express my vision, albeit humor, friendship, love, power... Whatever my vision at the time I am working, the figure most often plays a role. I am currently interested in the fragmenting of the figure as is seen in the Cocktail Party Series and in the Faces. I will always explore different narratives using the figure, it is a constant in my work.
